Forza 3

Now for a game that I was looking forward to for quite some time. Last Weekend a small package finally arrived containing the limited edition of the mighty Forza Motorsport 3.

Ok, some funny and useless goodies in the box. But of course I needed to have this limited version desperately.

Then, some hours later, after installing both the bonus dvd (with extra cars and tracks) and the game disc I could finally start my racing career. Action packed high end driving awaited me...

... with my first car, the Ford Fiesta Zetec S.

Luckily after playing for some time, racing got a bit more interesting.
Here are two races on the legendary Nordschleife, still praciticing ;)

One lap is in the amazing classical Audi Sport Quattro, back from the eighties:

And another one in the more recent Porsche 911 Turbo:

Inspiration Halloween

Halloween gave me some ideas to try some more painting in Corel Painter and Photoshop. The results and clear proof that I am a feasible artist can be seen below:

Xbox Live Indie Games: Krisotron

The title of the XBOX Live Indie Game I checked out today is KRISOTRON. It seems to be a solid action game, with a hero fighting all sorts of enemies in a set of highly challenging missions.

You should definitely check this title out.

The game is 24mb to download and costs 80 Microsoft Points for the full version.

Browser Games, Dragon Age Journeys, Machinarium

It seems like the browser finally gets more and more interesting as a gaming platform.

Two nice examples I came across this week are the following:

Dragon Age Journeys

First, Electronic Arts has released a free flash game called Dragon Age Journeys,
which is an appetizer to Bioware's upcoming roleplaying blockbuster Dragon Age.
It is worth to say that Dragon Age Journeys is far more than small flash game spinoff with a big name. It is in fact a full blown roleplaying game of its own. Story, quests, lots and lots of items, monsters, tactical round based fighting and you get it all for free. An interesting aspect is that by reaching several achievements in this game you can get some special items for use in Dragon Age next month as reward.

Here's one of the battles I had to fight in the game:

Machinarium

The next game is a very interesting looking indie game introduced at pax this year, I think. It's a point and click adventure about a robot and very nicely designed.
The game is available to buy on the Machinarium homepage and on Steam.
Great thing is, the developers put a flash demo of the first part of the game on their site so you can try it without any downloading or installing directly in your browser.

I also took a small video of the first part of the demo:

more racing

Besides trying those indie games I also found some more racing time. Here is some more footage of the GT3 RS in Need for Speed Shift.

Another great release this week was the Forza 3 Demo on Xbox Marketplace. The demo isn't very feature rich. There's only five cars, one for each car class and only one track, although with a very beautiful scenery. Should help over the waiting time until the Forza 3 release by the end of october.

more xbox live indie games

Today I found some time to check out two more xbox live indie games.

The first one is Pixel Man. Very simple and classic and basic and oldschool jump n run game. It reminds me of the eary C64 games which would only take up a few blocks on one side of the big floppy disks.

Without trying to distract the player with fancy graphics, Pixel Man focuses on very basic gaming mechanics instead.

Pixel Man is 348kb in size and costs 80 MS points for the full version.

The next game is also a jump n run and it is called "On a roll". It's a little more colorful than pixelman and works like a sonic the hedgehog clone.

It's download size is 38mb and it costs 240 Microsoft points for the full version.

Need for Speed Shift: Settings

This game has a lot of glitches and minor bugs. But the thing that upset me most was the silly handling and sloppy controls. Luckily it has to do mostly with the default control settings. In the need for speed forums I came across a very helpful post that makes the game much more playable and brings it much closer to forza for example:

There is now a 2nd fix for the sensitive steering/oversteer problem this game exhibits in its default settings. And let me tell you it is a NIGHT and DAY difference.
Please use 2nd fix along with the original thread suggestions on turning down sensitivity in the control options.

I have posted the original sensitivity config here:

Steering Dead Zone-15%
Accel Dead Zone-10%
Brake Dead Zone-10%
Steering sensitivity-5%
Acell Sensitivity -5%
Brake sensitivity-5%
Speed steering Sensitivity 100%

On to the 2nd fix:

At the main menu enter CAR GARAGE----> TUNING, press 'Y' to enter quick tuning mode.
Under the heading 'balance' move the slider all the way to OVERSTEER. That's right oversteer. Apparently the developer labeled this slider wrong or its a glitch. Turning the slider to oversteer will actually add understeer.

Need for Speed Shift: getting rid of rival drivers

After playing for some hours now, I am having nearly enough of this game. Physics are crappy, controls are horrible, graphics aren't that much overwhelming eiter. But maybe this is all due to the xbox version.
Still it delivers some funny moments:

Need for Speed Shift

Finally my copy of Need for Speed Shift has arrived.

Just had a first go in a BMW 135.

Need for Speed Shift seems to be a great racing game again like in the eary days. Maybe they are trying to make the upcoming Forza 3 and GT5 obsolete? Well, I doubt that it's THAT good but still looks like a lot fun.

XBOX LIVE INDIE GAME: STREETS OF FURY

Finally, the weekend has arrived and while I am waiting for the postman to deliver Need for Speed: Shift I am once looking what's new in the XBOX marketplace, especially in the indie games section.

Today I found a nice fighting game, much in the tradition of double dragon. The Beat em up "Streets of Fury" was a finalist of Microsoft's 2008 Dream Build Play Contest and features a lot of fighting action in single player as well as coop mode. Instead of making 3d models or 2d drawings for the fighters the developers chose to digitize the graphics of the fighters which adds another level of funny nonsense to the game and makes me remember this fine tradition from a lot of games in the 90ies like M+rt*l K+mb*t or Phantasmagoria for example.

Looks to be a very entertaining game although I didn't check out the coop mode yet.

The game size is 138mb and it costs 240 Microsoft Points for the full version.

XBOX LIVE INDIE GAME: MINER DIG DEEP

My exploration through the indie games section of the xbox live market place continues with a mine digging game. "Miner dig deep" is a retro mine digging game, niceley done, only 10mb in size and only 200 microsoft points. It has a very relaxing soundtrack and gameplay is ...well.. also quite relaxing. But nice if you like this style of game. For old times sake or just for a calm break from reality.

XBOX LIVE INDIE GAME: VEKS AND SILENCE

This morning I uncovered another game with zombies inside the indie games section of xbox live market place.
Veks and Silence is 2.5D jump n run shooter with zombies, gore, insanity, zombies and more zombies. Your mission is simple but fulfilling, pass each of the 13 levels, kill a lot of crazy modelled zombies with the help of bombs and several devastating weapons and be rewarded with lots of cartoonish craziness. Great game for lunch breaks. Or for whenever you feel the need to kill zombies.

The game is 156mb in size and costs 400 microsoft points for the full version.

XBOX LIVE INDIE GAME: I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MB1ES!!!1

I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MB1ES!!!1

No, sadly, I didn't. But that's the title of another XBOX LIVE Indie Game I found in the XBOX marketplace this morning. Very funny game, in my opinion. It looks homemade retro, but in a very good way. I especially like the soundtrack and the funky screen effects. Interesting journey through killing zombie land. I will have to practice a little though...

Only 13mb in size and only 80 microsoft points for the full version.

XBOX LIVE INDIE GAME: BAILOUT!

When I checked the Xbox marketplace this morning for new releases I stumbled upon this, err, very interesting game. I'm not quite sure what to make of it yet, but I could resist buying the full version so far. Let's see how much fun I can have with the demo.

But make up your own mind, here's a video of my second go:

iTunes 9 Horrors

Despite the fact that Steve Jobs was healthy enough again to get back on stage yesterday's apple media event was not very satisfying. First of all I'm not the perfect audience for new differenct colored ipods anyways. Neither do I embrace the fact that I can now buy ring tones for even more money than the songs they are based on.
Still I was looking forward to the the event because of the announcement of iTunes 9.
There were three major areas for great improvements over iTunes 8.
  • Speed/Cocoa

Responsiveness is not one of iTunes major strengths. After I saw the rewritten finder in Snow Leopard, I was very much hoping Apple would go for a similar rewrite for iTunes using the Cocoa API for gaining such an incredible speed improvement over its predecessor like they did with finder.

  • iTunes Store/AppStore

With now about 70.000 apps in the AppStore of which over 20.000 are games an improvement in visibilty and usability would be a great benefit for users and iphone developers alike.

  • Watched Folders

Since I started using iTunes I was hoping for iTunes being one day able to watch a local drive/folderlist or a network for changes and add songs to the library if I just copy some mp3s to those locations instead of always having to add new songs through iTunes which becomes extremely annoying if I have several computers using that same network drive as a music storage.
I am quite aware of the fact that the last point on my list "Watched Folders" is never likely to happen because apple wants the users having to use iTunes for music management.

So let's see what iTunes 9 can help me with my other problems.
After installation I see the new design. All very bright and shiny, even the background of the album view is now a horrible bright color. Looks like they hired a designer from Microsoft who do a very streamlined design but with a little bit too much everywhere so the look gives you the creeps either instantly or after two weeks the latest. But that's just my personal taste or distaste. So what's up with my other wishes:
  • Speed/Cocoa
Umm... nope... It is still as slow as its predecessor and it's no Cocoa.

  • AppStore
After I am totally blinded by enourmous wallpapers of the iTunes Store I finally find my way into the new Appstore. Let's look for games. Umm... Staff picks here, staff picks there... Let's just assume I don't care that much what the staff is picking for me. Ahh... there in the upper menu under a small arrow the AppStore the categories are hidden... Games, there it is. Let's go...
No, nothing goes. All they changed is actually flatten the hierarchy. The sub categories of games are nowhere to be seen no more. I can see the top 20 paid games, the top 20 free games and then, (right now) 657 pages of games. What the fuck??? They managed to even worsen the already bad experience. If I am looking for racing games or adventure games or puzzle games or whatever I now have to go through ALL AppStore games (right now about 20.000) to find what I might be interested in...
This is what I would call a total failure. Whoever was responsible for the development of iTunes 9 did a horrible job. Sure, there are very few improvements. I can now manage the apps on my phone and buy ringtones for enourmous amounts of money.
But for the moment I am an angry customer. Seems I start the wait for iTunes X in September 2010 probably...

Recap GDC Europe and Gamescom

The last three days I attended the GDC Europe in the hope of gathering inspiration and knowledge for my game projects. As this year's GDC Europe was held in Cologne, it saved me the effort of travelling. This convenience and my interest in the topic given, I made my decision to sign up a few weeks ago very fast. This week the event the eagerly awaited event finally arrived, it certainly had its up and downs, but this is a learning process for the event companies as well, so I think there will be a lot of improvements next year in all the areas that that weren't planned quite as well as you might expect from such a conference.

That said I will try to briefly sum up the highlights of the gdc. There were several major keynotes scattered over the days.

On monday Crytek co-founder Cevat Yerli gave a speech on the future of gaming graphics. He outlined the history of his company, described the differences and developments of Crytek's engine and also provided a few interesting details about their upcoming grapihcs engine.

There's a nice article on Gamasutra for anyone who likes to know more details.

As one of the main sponsors and in search for potential customers of their middleware, Crytek had a big presence on the conference.
I have to admit that I don't like Crytek a lot because I really did not get much fun out of the games they created.
I do however highly respect what they achieved in a short time and how they were able to stun the world with great visuals.

The next great keynote was on monday as well and held by Matias Myllyrinne of Remedy. As I really enjoyed the May Payne games and am eagerly awaiting Alan Wake since its announcement (in fact it was one of the very good reasons for me to buy the Xbox 360 at its launch) I was delighted to experience Myllrinne's great talk about the rise of Remedy and his vision for games in general and Alan Wake in particular.

Again, there's a a nice article over at Gamasutra summing up this keynote.

The third amazing keynote and speech was held by David Cage of Quantic Dream.

I didn't know what to expect from this man so it was a very positive surprise to hear his visions about game design and how he likes to approch this topic. I liked the idea of the game Fahrenheit and although it certainly had its weaknesses, it was a very interesting experiment and in my opinion it's very important that there are people in the game industry that are willing to experiment and take risks. Speculation about his upcoming title Heavy Rain run through the press since its announcement and, as far as I can tell from tell from my playtesting later on the gamescom on wednesday, the direction Quantic Dream is taking with Heavy Rain seems to be really paying off. The gaming experience is totally different, it seems to be great interactive narrative and art and playing this game will probably be a very rewarding experience. And the end of the keynote was very certain that if David Cage can write the stories for his games only half as well as his speech was constructed, then Heavy Rain will definiteley be one of the outstanding hit games this year.

For more information, Gamasutra has a great article again.

From my point of view this sums up the most important talks, but there were a lot more very interesting ones. Peter Molyneux had a nice keynote on the aspect of choice in games, CCP announced there upcoming title, a first person shooter and strategy game, that is closely tied to Eve Online, and there were a lot of sessions about success stories, business approaches, development topics and so on.

As I am a programmer I feel that the number of development sessions fell a bit short but there still were some interesting ones as well.

This sums up the GDC part and brings us the GAMESCOM. The biggest game conference in europe, this year for the first year in Cologne, started on wednesday, the same day that was the last day of the GDC.
So I took some hours between the (for me) relevant sessions and the late afternoon to explore the great circus that is the gamescom. Three big halls are devoted to "entertainment" and really all the big names were there.

Blizzard had a very impressive installment where players could already get into gaming with the upcoming Starcraft II und Diablo III. With Blizzard's amazingly huge fan base, the run on the seats where you could play these games was already incredible and probably was just a fraction of the big rush when the gamescom opens for all visitors from thurday (today) till sunday.

I was able to play Dragon Age, my personal highest anticipated title this year and was totally blown away by the game depths Bioware seems to has managed (at least this was my first impression from about half an hour playing) to compose into this title.
At Sony's booth I surprisingly found that they had two chapters of Heavy Rain available for play which was even in between the conference chaos an absolut joy to experience.
Of course all the other big upcoming titles were there, either ready to play or as a demo, Mass Effect 2, Command and Conquer 4, Uncharted 2, Forza Motorsport 3, to name just a few.
A lot of impressive Rockband and Guitar Hero installments, where visitors could perform "live on stage" added nicely to the atmosphere.

GDC

I still haven't comprehended last weeks news. Iphone SDK 3 resides still untouched on my harddisk as well as the silverlight 3 beta.
The Microsoft Web Platform Installer told me I couldn't install Silverlight 3 Tools for Visual Studio side by side with Silverlight 2 Tools for Visual Studio. The Web Platform Installer can not, however, save me some trouble and automatically uninstall the Silverlight 2 Tools for Visual Studio. Waiting for new Ram Bars to arrive (yummy). I have to set up a new testing system for all those beta and alpha stuff from last week.

Still the information flow is far from depleting and instead crushing my mind for another week as this week's GDC is rolling big. Lots and lots and lots of information about independent and commercial games and game development. If you're interested, you can check on GAMASUTRA, they cover the conference really well.

Lots of news for developers this week (?)(!)

This is an interesting week for developers. I am currently downloading the iPhone SDK 3.0 beta and the iPhone OS 3.0 beta.
What's new? Well a short list of the interesting new features:
  • selling additional in game content (this is very interesting for developers who want to sell addon levels, content subscriptions, etc.)
  • p2p connectivity via bluetooth (interesting for games or sharing data in applications)
  • third-party-accessory-apps (allows developers to create and interface hardware extensions for the iPhone to be connected to the iPhone dock connector)
  • push-notification (no real running in background for developer apps, but push notification support)
  • api to utilize google maps in developer applications
  • corelocation support for turn by turn for developer apps (but developer has to use his own maps here if maps are needed)
  • cut and paste (well, at last...)
  • mms (i never use mms on the phone, but a strongly demanded feature by iPhone users)
  • landscape mode and landscape keyboard in most apple applications (mail, stocks, etc)
  • voice memos
  • spotlight search through all key applications and emails (local and on imap servers)
  • support for stereo blutooth headphones (only iphone 3g)
iPhone OS 3.0 will be shipping in summer. beta SDK and beta OS are available now.

check arstechnica for more information (or any of the other billion news sites of your choice).

I will post some more on this topic when I find the time to play around with the new sdk or decide to install iPhone OS 3.0 beta on my phone.

Now waiting for MiX09 (with surely much developer news from microsoft (ie8, silverlight3, windows7 rc, asp.net mvc ... ?? ) to start...

XNA 2D games come to the browser via Silverlight

Wow, this seems to be an amazing piece of work. This is not about Silverlight 3 yet, but I suppose there might be some interesting announcements on MIX09 in a few days. Still hoping for some 3d support and stuff.
But what this post is about, is Silversprite, a codeplex project that actually will run your XNA 2D games in Silverlight with "no" code changes. I will try this out later. Seems pretty amazing.

First Entry

Ok now... I'm going to try and post some thoughts in this blog. Let's see how this will work and how long I will be able to keep focus.

Cheers!
